Queridos amigos,
He dicho muchas veces que mi padre cumplía múltiples funciones.
Además de padre, abuelo, trabajador social y educador, también fue un activista social dedicado a diversas causas relacionadas con la justicia.
Muchos de nuestros familiares cubanos recuerdan a mi papá como un pastor que habló con valentía sobre lo que significaba ser un líder religioso que luchaba contra la injusticia del brutal bloqueo estadounidense a Cuba. Se le recuerda como un activista social que, como David, luchó contra Goliat y se enfrentó al poderoso imperio estadounidense.
Para mí, por supuesto, era ante todo mi papá. Pero, por ser el hombre que fue, también me enseñó lo que significaba ser maestro, pastor, una persona que se puso de pie, dispuesta a arriesgar su vida, si era necesario (lo que a veces generó temor y preocupación en su familia y amigos).
Codirigí la infame delegación a Nicaragua cuando le dispararon a mi padre por parte de las fuerzas de la Contra, respaldadas por el gobierno estadounidense. Aunque me asustó ese incidente que me cambió la vida, también presencié con orgullo cómo transformó lo que yo, como su hija, veía como una tragedia personal en un movimiento: ¡Pastores por la Paz! Desde 1987, Pastores por la Paz ha liderado decenas de caravanas a Centroamérica y el Caribe.
Desde 1992, miles de personas han experimentado Cuba de primera mano participando en delegaciones y caravanas organizadas por IFCO/Pastores por la Paz. Estos viajes también les brindaron a los caravanistas la oportunidad de educar directamente a sus familiares y amigos sobre la realidad cubana.
Igualmente importante, también presencié cómo mi padre trabajó humildemente con personas de fe y de conciencia en Estados Unidos y en todo el mundo para apoyar a nuestra familia cubana, que ha sido aterrorizada implacablemente por el imperio estadounidense durante más de seis décadas.
Hasta el día de hoy, los participantes de caravanas anteriores me recuerdan con frecuencia el impacto transformador del proyecto Pastores por la Paz.
En este 15.º aniversario de su partida de este mundo para unirse a nuestros queridos ancestros, es un honor recordar su legado y recordar las muchas lecciones que nos enseñó.
¡Lucius continúa iluminando una brillante luz sobre aquellos de nosotros que luchamos por la justicia social!

Dear Friends,
Many times before I have said that my father wore multiple hats.
Aside from being a father, a grandfather, a social worker and an educator, he was also a social activist dedicated to various justice related causes.
Many of our Cuban family members remember my Dad as a pastor that spoke out boldly about what it meant to be a faith leader fighting the injustice of the brutal US Blockade of Cuba. He is remembered as a social activist who like David fought against Goliath and stood up to the mighty US empire.
For me of course he was first and foremost my Dad. But as a result of being the man he was, he also taught me what it meant to be a teacher, a pastor, a person who stood up willing to put their life on the line – if necessary (at times creating fear and concern for his family an friends).
I co-led the infamous delegation to Nicaragua that resulted in my father being shot by US government-backed Contra forces. While frightened by that life-changing incident, I also proudly witnessed the way he transformed what I, as his daughter, saw as a personal tragedy into a movement — Pastors for Peace! Since 1987, Pastors for Peace has led dozens of caravans to Central American and Caribbean.
Since 1992, thousands have experienced Cuba first-hand by participating in delegations and caravans organized by IFCO/Pastors for Peace. These trips also gave caravanistas the opportunity to directly educate their family and friends about the Cuban reality!
Equally important, I also witnessed the way that my father humbly worked with people of faith and people of conscience across the US and across the globe to stand in support of our Cuban family that has relentlessly been terrorized by the US empire for more than six decades.
To this day, I am often reminded by past caravan participants of the life-changing impact of the Pastors for Peace project.
On this 15th anniversary of when he left this earthly plain and joined our beloved ancestors, it’s an honor to remember his legacy and to lift up the many lessons he taught us.
Lucius continues to shine a bright light on those of us who struggle for social justice!!
