Martí´s birthplace through local communities

The project “Casa natal en el Barrio”, sponsored by the headquarters of Havana and the Municipal José Martí Cultural Society, travel through the communities of the Isle of Youth to show objects and accessories of our National Hero didacticly through 10 billboards.

“I am very happy to learn more about Marti, how he suffered in prison for defending the independence of Cuba, to see what he did for his country when he was a boy,” said Judith Kenya, a pioneer of ten years, who lives in the community 41 in the Special Municipality.

The project was created in 2010 with the objective of reaching all corners of the Cuban countryside and deepen in José Martí´s life.

The billboards show some Martí´s belongings like the shackles used in prison, college desk, a wallet given by his friends and the knife he was carrying at the time of his death in combat in Dos Rios.

The inhabitants of that community headed by children inmediatlely discovered the arrival of visitors, who quickly became familiar with the audience and made interesting the singular encounter in which children of the day care center and students of the primary school located there, sang songs with the verses and tales of the Cuban Revolutionary Party founder and leader of the revolution of 1895.

“This is the second visit of the project to the territory; last year we went to Cocodrilo town and this time we will visit neighborhoods of La Fe and Nueva Gerona until Thursday,” said Josep Trujillo, vice president of the José Martí Cultural Society from Havana.

Casa Natal en el Barrio” project gave José Martí Cultural Society of territory the audiovisual Dos Rios: El enigma; Ismaelillo, Próceres de América and a virtual tour, Martí en la habana, with the aim of expanding crucial moments of the Master’s life.

“This initiative helps to foment and develop patriotic and anti-imperialist values, expands the knowledge about Marti and also is an activity where the whole community participates,” noted David Serrano, professor of the near community Evangelina Cosio.
