A contagious joy was lived today September 27 in the 40 pioneers schools of the Isle of Youth. Students of primary, secondary and special schools elected their leaders at collective and detachment level, essential structures of José Martí Pioneers Organization (OPJM).

With the joy of exercising democracy from early on, the students chose the best and brightest students, who will now guide their activities within the group and the school.

The pioneers of the primary level developed their votes publicly and directly, while in junior high schools, the vote was secret and previously consulting the biographies of the candidates placed in the bulletin boards.

Jorge Marzo Chabrol, pioneer guide of Rafael José Varona secondary school, said that students and teachers received training days ago to develop a transparent electoral process.
The students voted in three polling stations, one for each grade and advised by their teachers. A principal leader, a head of Study, Emulation, Labor Activity and a chief  of the Pioneers Scout Movement will be who represent the membership of the OPJM.
The election process was also a tribute to the pioneer martyr Paquito González Cueto, killed on September 29, 1933, who was just 13 years old when police of the tyrant Gerardo Machado repressed beastly the popular manifestation that accompanied Julio Antonio Mella´s ashes, brought from Mexico for his burial in Havana.
