The installation works of a state-of-the-art forest nursery in the Isle of Youth aimed at the production of timber-yielding trees successfully started with the support of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

UNIDO promotes cooperation between developed and developing countries to speed up industrial development, encouraging investments and technology transfer; it brings $ 199,000 to the project.

The facility, planned to be functioning next July, will allow an increase of the wood quantity to be used in the biomass program aimed at the energy production, as well as in the forestation improvement that has a strong repercussion on the environment.

Once the works are completed, said Severo Pagarizabal, official of the Comprehensive Forest Company in the Isle of Youth, they will humanize the nursery’s work due to its high mechanization.

On the other hand, Cristobal Mañas Porcel, UNIDO representative, said the Spanish technology being installed has been effectively tested during more than 30 years in that Iberian country.

In the project are also involved the Meat Complex and the Electric Company, with the coordination of Environmental Technological Innovation Centre (CITMA by its Spanish acronym).

The Isle of Youth has a power plant that runs on forest biomass in the southern town of Cocodrilo, and another one being constructed in the town of La Melvis; in the Meat Complex they are also working in the installation of boilers feeding on wood as raw material.
