More than 95 percent of babies that are born in the maternity ward of Héroes del Baire General Hospital in the Isle of Youth have exclusive breastfeeding until their six months of life.
With this achievement the Special Municipality celebrates the World Breastfeeding Week, which began on August 1st until 7, in order to foment the importance of the natural milk for the baby’s development.
Rafael Enrique Diffur, neonatologist and responsible of the program in the territory, explained that this generous action is promoted in the hospital and communities through the Family doctors and also throughout the media; although during this week they have promoted much further the message on the importance of breastfeeding─ the best way to provide newborns with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development.

He explained that breast milk is a liquid very complex biologically. Not only it’s nutritive, but also has many immune factors that stimulate the immunity of that infant, which we classify as depressed because it is an immature organism, specially the premature newborns.

“It is through the milk that the baby mommies will bring their experience to avoid immunological respiratory diseases and diarrhea. So scientists have been several studies on the topic in order to demonstrate the efficacy of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life and then supplemented breastfeeding for at least one year and up to two years or more to prevent diabetes mellitus, hypertension pressure and obesity in adult life.

From December 13 of 1994 the Héroes del Baire General Teaching Hospital has the condition Amigo de la Madre y el Niño (Mother and Baby-Friendly Program) for fulfilling the indicators established for the maternity lactation.

Cuba is the best country in Latin America in the International Campaign for a successful breastfeeding according to results of an investigation by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
